A properly installed asphalt driveway starts well below the surface. At Asphalt Evolution, we know that the stone base beneath the asphalt determines how long your driveway will last. We excavate soft topsoil, install a compacted crushed aggregate base, and grade the surface so water drains away from your home instead of pooling on the pavement. Only then do we lay the hot-mix asphalt and compact it with heavy rollers to create a dense, smooth surface.

Several signs indicate it is time for a new asphalt driveway rather than another round of repairs:

• Extensive alligator cracking covering large areas of the surface
• Widespread potholes or sinking sections that return after patching
• Pavement that has become severely faded, brittle, or crumbling at the edges
• Drainage problems causing standing water after rain
• The existing surface is approaching or past 20 years of age

If the damage is limited to surface cracks or isolated potholes, driveway repair or resurfacing may be more appropriate. We evaluate each property on-site and recommend the most cost-effective approach.

Proper grading is the foundation of a long-lasting driveway. We use laser-guided grading equipment to establish a slope that directs rainwater away from your garage and home foundation. The crushed stone base is spread and compacted in layers with heavy vibratory rollers until it is solid and unyielding. This base distributes vehicle weight evenly and prevents the asphalt from sinking or cracking under load. Without adequate base preparation, even the best hot-mix asphalt will fail prematurely.

Once the base is prepared and graded, we apply a tack coat of liquid asphalt binder to help the new layer adhere. Hot-mix asphalt is then delivered and spread with commercial paving equipment at the proper temperature and thickness. The asphalt is laid in a continuous pass to minimize cold joints, then compacted with steel-wheel vibratory rollers. Edges are hand-tamped and shaped for a clean, professional finish that holds its form over time.

Compaction is what gives asphalt its strength and density. We roll the surface while the asphalt is still hot, compressing the material into a tight, impermeable layer that resists water penetration and rutting. The final pass leaves a smooth, uniform surface. After compaction, the driveway needs time to cool and cure before vehicle traffic resumes.

The actual lifespan depends on soil conditions, drainage quality, traffic volume, climate exposure, and how consistently the surface is sealcoated and repaired. Regular sealcoating every 3 to 5 years and prompt crack repair are the most important factors in maximizing driveway longevity.
