Asphalt patching is the process of removing a damaged section of pavement and replacing it with new hot-mix asphalt. Unlike surface-level fixes, proper patching goes full depth—saw-cutting through the asphalt, excavating to the base, and rebuilding the structure from the ground up. This method produces a permanent repair that holds up under traffic and weather, unlike temporary cold patch products that wash out and degrade quickly.

Patching is typically needed when localized areas of pavement fail while the surrounding surface remains intact. The most common causes include:

• Potholes: Formed when water penetrates cracks, erodes the base, and the surface collapses under vehicle weight
• Localized pavement failure: Small sections where the sub-base has softened or washed away
• Utility cuts: Trenches from plumbing or electrical repairs that were not properly restored
• Heavy load damage: Areas where concentrated vehicle weight has rutted or broken the surface
• Drainage problems: Spots where standing water has degraded the asphalt and base

Patching is the right solution when damage is confined to specific, identifiable areas and the rest of the pavement surface is structurally sound. A few potholes in a parking lot or a single sunken section in a driveway can be patched effectively without resurfacing or replacing the entire area. Patching restores safety, eliminates trip hazards, and prevents water from further eroding the base.

If potholes and failures are widespread across the surface, patching individual spots becomes a losing battle—new problems will keep appearing as the underlying base continues to deteriorate. In these situations, resurfacing or complete repaving addresses the root cause rather than treating symptoms. We begin by saw-cutting a clean rectangular boundary around the damaged area—never an irregular shape, because straight edges compact better and resist water intrusion. The deteriorated asphalt is excavated down to solid base material. If the stone base has been compromised, we add and compact fresh aggregate to restore structural support. A tack coat of liquid asphalt binder is applied to the sidewalls for adhesion, and hot-mix asphalt is placed and compacted in layers with a vibratory plate compactor until the patch is flush and dense.

The best way to prevent potholes is to stop water from reaching the base. Regular crack sealing and sealcoating keep moisture out of the pavement structure. Addressing cracks as soon as they appear—before they widen and allow water to erode the base—prevents the cycle of pothole formation that plagues unmaintained asphalt surfaces.
